Episode 6

Cat and Mouse

When Junah Cat first wandered into the garden, the sounds, scents, and all the opposites had attracted him.  Now, as he scanned the garden, out of the corner of his eye, he saw some grass and leaves moving across the stone walkway. Movement, he thought, I can catch that. He bounded over to the clump of moving leaves and gently put his paw on it. He heard a squeak and jumped back.

Then he saw a little brown lump rush off to the side of the garden and into a small hole hidden in the dirt. Being a cat, Junah ran after it and put his paw over the hole. He was sort of playing and sort of catching whatever was there. All of a sudden he felt a sharp pain in his paw. He pulled it back and saw a pointed twig sticking out of the hole. Something had poked him.

“What are you?” he asked.

“I am a mouse, Mister Cat,” said the squeaky, fast-talking voice in the hole.

“Why did you poke me?” Junah asked.

“You were blocking my door,” said the Mouse, trying to sound fearless.

“Oh, I’m sorry,” said Junah, “I am new here in the garden, and I didn’t know what you were.”

Thinking quickly, the mouse said, “Well, my name is Maureen, but my friends call me Mo. If you don’t hurt me, I could be your friend. I could show you around the garden.”

“Hurt you?” said Junah, “Naw, I’m just curious; I want to learn all I can about this place. That’s what the sisters asked me to do. They said to find the secret to the garden. I could use a friend.”

“Well, you got one then,” said Mo, thinking that Junah could be a big help in protecting her from other critters in the area.  “What’s your name?”

“My name is Junah,” he said.

“Let me show you around, Junah,” Mo said.

Junah’s purr:  Making friends with the unknown can be helpful.
